Soup or Science: Fan Superstitions

We’re not about to change anything that might change anything.

I had a theory about Jason Witten’s facial hair and Monday he confirmed it.

Questioned about his playoff beard on “The Jason Witten Show”, he told BaD Radio hosts that he really hadn’t put much thought into growing it out.

“But if the soup is good,” Witten said, “why change the ingredients?”

And that’s when I knew that Jason Witten and I had something in common besides the number 82 on our jerseys—football superstitions.

Before the Thanksgiving table was set (before my first cup of coffee), the blue towels were hung in the bathroom and kitchen. I put on my blue star earrings and my jersey, then went to prepare for our dinner guests. Yes, it was Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday). But it was also game day.

With ten straight wins, longtime Cowboys fans are far from over confident. Years of dashed hopes in the playoffs keep us tight-lipped about success.

Sure, we love hearing the stats of our rookie duo (Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott) and seeing our defense play like champions week after week. But we have a hard time saying things like “10-1” or “playoff beard” out loud. We don’t take anything for granted. And we’re not about to change anything that might change anything.

Even if we must sit in the same spot or drink out of the same glass or wear the same jersey or text the same people every game, we will keep doing the same things we are doing, as long as our team is doing the same thing. (Got it?)

Today I put my star decal on the back window of my car. One more win and the yard sign (which hasn’t been out of the closet since 1997) goes right next to the front door. Baby steps.

So, confess.

If you’re a sports fan, you probably have a sports ritual. I’d love to hear it.

Post photos. Brag away. But please, if you’re a Cowboys fan: Don’t change a thing!

(And, Jason Witten, here’s my favorite soup recipe.)

Hi, I’m Karen

After years of writing for newspapers, I thought I had seen it all. Then came the empty nest and retirement and I realized I’ hadn’t seen anything yet.

Welcome to my blog where the triumphs and trials are my own. Sometimes I learn from them. Often I don’t.
Hope you find something useful.
